NOVELL TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: NFS 1.2C Fixes and Enhancements DOCUMENT ID: TID200051 DOCUMENT REVISION: A DATE: 19AUG94 ALERT STATUS: Yellow INFORMATION TYPE: Symptom Solution README FOR: NFS193.EXE NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: NetWare NFS 1.2B NetWare NFS 1.2C ABSTRACT: NFC193 is an update to NetWare NFS 1.2C. It contains both fixes and enhancements. NFS193 must be applied only to NFS purchased as 1.20C. NOT to NFS 1.20B with NFS153 applied. ----------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. FTP data packets that contain only a Carriage Return character no longer close the FTP window. The FTP server no longer abends when a user's attempt to log in would cause the user's concurrent login restriction to be exceeded. A new parameter in FTPSERV.CFG allows you to specify that the FTPSERV NLM should stay loaded after it is loaded initially. In previous versions, FTPSERV NLM was always unloaded automatically after a period of inactivity. See below for specifics on the new IDLE parameter. ASCII files transferred between the NetWare server and Macintosh clients no longer have a null character (0) inserted after each carriage return. When the FTP server is used as a gateway to a remote NetWare server, it now logs out the remote connection upon completion of transfers rather than logging out the local connection. Changes to PLPD.NLM ------------------- When a very long filename exists in the print queue, the server no longer abends when users run the "lpq -l" command from remote hosts. Printing from UNIX hosts to NetWare print queues is no longer stopped when the NetWare account associated with the print job has expired. The PLPD NLM now works correctly with all versions CLIB NLM (3.x,4.x) in relation to form numbers. When print jobs names sent from UNIX hosts contain a percent sign (%), the server no longer abends. You can now specify which NetWare volume is used to store temporary print jobs when they are spooled. See section 3.2 for information on implementing this new feature. Changes to LPR_PSRV.NLM ----------------------- The NetWare-to-UNIX print gateway (LPR gateway) now supports up to 256 printers. Changes to NFSADMIN.NLM ----------------------- The NetWare-to-UNIX printer gateway now supports up to 256 printers. The NFSADMIN utility now allows file information to be set for directory that begin with SYS:MAIL, SYS:PUBLIC, and SYS:SYSTEM. For example, you can set the file permissions on the directories with names like the following: SYS:MAIL15 SYS:PUBLIC2 SYS:SYSTEMS The utility still prevents you from changing ownership or permissions on the SYS:MAIL, SYS:PUBLIC, and SYS:SYSTEM directories. Changes to LOCKD.NLM -------------------- The lock daemon no longer returns a failure to UNIX when DOS opens a file first, and a UNIX host tries to readlock a region of the same file. Changes to NFSSERV.NLM ---------------------- Exported NFS volumes are now checked when the NFS Server software is loaded. Changes to PLPDDEF.EXE ---------------------- NFS193 provides support files that are required by the PLPDDEF utility when it is run on NetWare 4.01 servers. If installation is from floppy disk, give the disk a label of NFS1 and copy the self extracting file NFS193.EXE to the root of the floppy disk. B. If installation is from the server, copy the self extracting file NFS193.EXE into a subdirectory called NFS1 on any valid NetWare volume. Type NFS193 to extract the files. ====================================== Installing NFS193 locally at the server ====================================== 1. Run UNISTOP to unload NFS. 2. From the server console, type the following command: LOAD INSTALL 3. At the Install NLM screen, select Product Options. 4. Press to add a new product. 5. At the prompt, insert the Upgrade diskette in the disk drive. If the diskette is not in drive A:, change the drive letter to the correct letter (NetWare_Volume:NFS1). Then, press to start the installation. 6. When installation is complete, Press to get to the Main menu. 7. Press to exit the Install NLM. 8. Bring down the server by typing the following commands: DOWN EXIT 9. Restart the server by typing the following command: SERVER The NFS193 is now installed on the server. ========================== Installing NFS193 remotely ========================== To install NFS193 from a workstation, complete the following steps: 1. Run RCONSOLE. 2. Choose the server you wish to install NFS193 on. 3. Follow steps 1 through 7 above. 4. Exit RCONSOLE and go to server console where NFS193 has been installed. Bring down the server by typing the following commands: DOWN EXIT 5. Restart the server by typing the following command: SERVER NFS193 is now installed on the server. IMPORTANT CONFIGURATION NOTES ============================= Important information about configuring NetWare NFS 1.2c after you have applied NFS193. FTP Server Configuration Options -------------------------------- NFS193 adds two new configurable options to SYS:\ETC\FTPSERV.CFG. The options, IDLE and READCANCEL, are described below. IDLE - The value is in the number of minutes that the FTP server waits without a connection before it unloads itself. Minimum value: 1 minute Default value: 2 minutes Maximum value: 2,880 minutes Notes ----- 1. If the IDLE option is omitted from the FTPSERV.CFG file, the default value of 2 minutes is used. 2. If a value of -1 is used for the IDLE option, the FTP server does not automatically unload itself. When this value is used, you must manually unload the server using the following command: UNLOAD FTPSERV.NLM READCANCEL - The value is in the number of minutes the FTP server waits before timing out when a connection is hung because a PUT operation was terminated abnormally. Minimum value: 1 minute Default value: 5 minutes Maximum value: 60 minutes Notes ----- 1. If the READCANCEL option is omitted from the FTPSERV.CFG file, the default value of 5 minutes is used. 2. When an FTP data connection times out during a read operation, an error message similar to the following is displayed on the Product Kernel Screen: 04/01/93 14:23:05 FTPSERV-Error: Failed to receive file from FTP client host1. PLPD Configuration Option ------------------------- NFS193 adds a configuration option to SYS:\ETC\NWPARAMS. The option, SPOOL_DIRECTORY, allows you to specify the path of the server directory where temporary spool files are stored. To use the option, place the following two lines in SYS:\ETC\NWPARAMS, substituting your desired path for . [PRINT_ADMIN] SPOOL_DIRECTORY Example: To have temporary spool files stored in the \TEMP\SPOOL directory on a NetWare volume named VOL7, you would create a TEMP directory in the VOL7: volume, then add the following entries to the NWPARAMS file: [PRINT_ADMIN] SPOOL_DIRECTORY VOL7:\TEMP Notes ----- 1. If the SPOOL_DIRECTORY option is omitted from the NWPARAMS file, SYS:\ETC\SPOOL\SPOOL is used as the default path. 2. When you specify the path for the SPOOL directory, omit the SPOOL directory itself; the system automatically adds SPOOL to the path that you provide. For example, if you specify SYS:ETC\FILES\MINE, the system adds SPOOL to the path and stores temporary spool files in SYS:\ETC\FILES\MINE\SPOOL. Note also that all of the directories you specify in the path already must exist. Deleting NFS193 --------------- If for some reason, NFS193 must be de-installed, load INSTALL from the server and choose PRODUCT OPTIONS. Highlight NFSPTCH and hit delete. Since the removal of non-existent serialization information is being attempted, the following message will appear and should be ignored: Could not remove the serialization information. But product removal will continue. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Any trademarks referenced in this document are the property of their respective owners.
